‘Europe is what you make of it’  (Mary Ann DeVlieg)

PROJECTION OF EUROPE is a theatre project for 6 young stage directors from 6 European countries both within and beyond the borders of the European Union: Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Turkey. In this model experiment, six directors will be asked – on behalf of the people of their respective countries – to present their personal and theatrical views of ‘old’ and ‘new’ Europe as a shared home.

The recent expansion of the EU by 12 nations has sparked particularly vehement debate about its underlying cultural, religious and historical foundations. In terms of economic and currency policy the European Union has indeed achieved integration, but what about the people of Europe? Transcending national boundaries, are there values capable of uniting all those who live in Europe? Can Europe’s rich cultural diversity be preserved? How can Europe as a whole evolve its own identity and soul?

Six  partners – Theaterfestival “auawirleben”/Schlachthaus Theater, Berne (CH); Divadlo Komedie, Prague (CZ); Theater NO99, Tallinn (EE); Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg (DE); Pan Pan Theatre, Dublin (IRL); and DOT Theatre Istanbul (TR) – will each dispatch one stage director on this joint exploratory journey called PROJECTION OF EUROPE. In a quest for specifically European themes beyond current political rhetoric, a platform for theatre productions will be evolved that take a visceral and exuberant look at the many facets and narratives of Europe, sounding out the wishes, hopes and anxieties of its citizens. Set against the backdrop of their respective national cultural identities, these six independently conceived stage plays will explore Europe from very specific perspectives.

PROJECTION OF EUROPE takes place August 31 to September 9, 2007 accompanied by a supporting programme at Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg.
